SpeakeasyDC promotes the art of live storytelling through our events, including our monthly open mic, solo shows, ensemble performances, special events, story socials, classes, and recordings.
We believe that storytelling and the oral tradition have a unique
ability to give color and texture to human experience, to promote understanding, and to create a sense of connection and meaning.
What is live storytelling? The telling and sharing of original, first-person stories drawn from real-life experience. "Live" refers to the oral and extemporaneous nature of what we do (as differentiated from visual forms of storytelling like film and literature).
About the open mic:
Is it like a poetry reading or stand-up comedy? Not exactly. Though the stories are often funny and occasionally poetic, we don't do poems and we don't do jokes. We do stories. And it's not a reading. No notes. It's all about the oral tradition.(Poets and comedians are welcome, but whatever you do must have a story-quality)
Who can get on the open mic? Anyone with a good story, related to the theme of the night. Be sure that you are telling a story. Not a lecture or a rant or a musing about life, or a dumping of your raw emotional pain or a retelling of the night you got wasted in high school, but an honest-to-goodness "what-happens-next" story.
How can I get on the open mic? Sign up for the theme that suits your story. We welcome newbies and provide coaching for all open-mic performers. We also have classes.
